Boxzy showing connected - but will not allow manual movement

We have setup the Boxzy, following the guides.

The Unit shows connected in the software - but will not react on the actual unit. Manual movement won't work, when we type to print it just does a virtual walkthough - no actual movement. The unit wont reset to home in x, y, z.

Master Yoda's suggestions should have you up and running in no time. I would pay special attention to the thread in the link he provided.

I connected BoXZY to my PC and it works reat, but I wanted to move BoXZY (less mess in the living room) so I got an old laptop.

The software sais "Connected" on the laptop but it can't send any commands. (sais 5 commands waiting) Looks like the USB connector on my PC works but the one on my laptop is not suitable.

Could this be because it does not have a power suply? (so the battery of the laptop is not drained) I would think since the BoXZY has it's own power suply there would be no need for power over USB.

by

I'm surprised your computer doesn't have power over USB. BoXZY does require USB power. I'm told this is in case the USB gets disconnected; the machine will immediately quit with no delay. You can change this, if you go here: Is there currently a way to run from an SD card?

You can see where to install a jumper to power the Arduino from the main power and not the USB in my post.

by

My desktop has power over usb, the laptop does not. A common problem with lots of laptops. Although i'm not 100% sure if power is the problem, it sais connected, but won't execute commands.

by

I'd check the baudrates on the interface for your older laptop also. USB 2.0 and 3.0 will provide power over USB. If your laptop is pre-2003 it may use USB 1.0 which BoXZY doesn't seem to like.

Chosen Solution

Resulted from a broken USB port connection on the Arduino board itself.

Hi, I have this problem too.

The consoles in the repetier host software and OctoPrint both show the BoXZY being acknowledged over the serial connection and messages such as extruder temperature and stepper motor commands being sent/received, but the BoXZY isn`t responsive.

I should add, the fans at the bottom of the board aren`t running when I switch the power supply on.

by

If the fans are not running, BoXZY does not have power. Have you tried the power switch on the back of BoXZY at the bottom of the electronics box where the cables go in?

by

*egg on face*

I'll show myself out...

(sorry, had just moved it and set it back up again, don`t remember hitting that switch)

Thanks for the amazingly fast response though!

It's pretty common, no worries. Happy I could help

Did you flip the switch on the back of the boxzy unit where the USB plugs in?

Yes, when we do that another fan starts up.

And the power supply is plugged in, key turned, green light on? (just covering the bases, not trying to insult your intelligence)

by

Yes, we went through all the setup steps.

by

All I can think of then is that something is disconnected or contacts aren't being met. Sorry that I can't be of more help :(

Inside the boxzy software, stop the server If it is on, you won't be able to connect through the com port.

Are you using a stock USB cable (supplied with BoXZY)?

I would definitely recommend the use of a short USB cable with ferrite beads.

Make sure you are directly connected to PC w/o intermittent adapters and/or hubs.

Make sure you are running BoXZY software as an administrator and that anti-virus software is not blocking it.

Make sure your COM port is setup correctly in windows device control panel and it corresponds to settings within the BoXZY software. This is a vital step ...

For reference, this thread might be of use to you.
