Yes SketchUp can be used for creating models but there are a few steps you have to do first. You need to install a plugin to export STL files that the BoXZY software can read.

First find the Extension Warehouse under the Window Menu

Then search for SketchUp STL and follow the download instructions

Once you have the extension installed, you will find a new menu option under the File menu called Export STL.

In this menu you want the export units to be Millimeters and file format to be Binary. BoXZY and most 3D printers default mode is millimeters not inches. Be sure to check your file once it is in the BoXZY software to make sure the measurements are correct. (To be safe, we have switched all of our designing over to Metric. It takes a while to get used to but it makes the whole process for 3D printing much easier)

The option to 'Export selected geometry only' means it will only export what you select on your workspace. We use this since we have SketchUp files with multiple parts in one file. This can be a really useful feature.

Once you export the STL you can then load that part into the BoXZY software. Good luck!

It is good to know that SketchUp might be used after some fine-tuning.

I wonder if someone was successful in using the promoted Autodesk Fusion 360.

I got it to work on an old laptop where it is slow, but not on my faster desktop computer with two 24" screens. Fusion gives an error message upon start and keeps telling me that I shall change my Firewall or proxy settings. But it seems that this software is somehow blocked by company IT-rules, which I can't override.

On the laptop I was not able to use Autodesk Fusion for anything useful to generate BoXZY input. I could only successfully download projects from thingsiverse and print sort of okay.

After encountering the limits of sketch up I downloaded auto desk fusion and it's great in just a few days I have done far more advanced things than I could with sketch up. I have a gaming rig with Windows 7 that I use for everything. Your problem could be due to the fact that fusion 360 is a cloud based program.

But SketchUP is cloud-based too, IMHO, is it? I was able to draw a simple 3D-object (box, cylinder and sphere) but did not manage to print it so far.

But I started a BoXZYwiki for us. I always found a wiki style far better than any unstructured FAQ.:

How do you like that?
